How to Track Ovulation by Checking Your Cervix Position
While BBT and checking cervical mucus are very good indicators for knowing where your fertility window is, checking the position and opening of your cervix gives you even better insight into knowing when your ovulating. As your cervix moves positions throughout your different cycles, it also opens more and more into your cycle before closing again.
Cervix Changes Throughout the Cycle
1. Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5 approx.)
- Position: Low in the vagina
- Texture: Firm, similar to the tip of your nose
- Opening: Closed
- Purpose: Your body is shedding the uterine lining
2. Post-Menstrual / Early Follicular Phase (Days 6–9 approx.)
- Position: Low to mid
- Texture: Firm
- Opening: Slightly closed
- Purpose: Cervix is preparing for the fertile window
3. Pre-Ovulation / Fertile Phase (Days 10–14 approx.)
- Position: Rising higher in the vagina
- Texture: Softer, feels more like lips
- Opening: Slightly open
- Purpose: Your cervix becomes more receptive to sperm
4. Ovulation (Peak Fertility, typically Day 14–16)
- Position: High in the vagina
- Texture: Soft and open
- Opening: Most open
- Purpose: This is the fertile window — sperm can travel easily to meet the egg
5. Post-Ovulation / Luteal Phase (Days 17–28 approx.)
- Position: Low
- Texture: Firm again
- Opening: Closed
- Purpose: Progesterone rises, making the cervix less receptive to sperm
How to Check Cervix Position
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Insert a clean finger into your vagina (normally the index finger).
- Gently feel for your cervix’s height, texture, and openness.
- Record your observations daily alongside BBT and cervical mucus.
Tips
- Be gentle and patient — it takes time to notice patterns.
- Combine cervix tracking with BBT and cervical mucus for more accurate ovulation prediction.
- Patterns over several cycles are more important than exact measurements on a single day.
- Tracking regularly builds awareness and confidence in your fertility journey.
